Can the Rind (or Crust) of a Cheese be Consumed?

In general, one could say that hard and medium-hard cheeses have inedible rinds, and soft cheese rinds can be eaten.

Nearly all hard and medium-hard cheeses come with a rind consisting of a thin, plastic-like outer layer serving to prevent them drying out and moulding. Such rinds are tough and not suited for consumption.
