The history and taste of Passendale cheese
The soft Belgian cheese Passendale comes from the municipality of the same name in Zonnebeke in West Flanders. By now, this cheese has rightly conquered a permanent place in the hearts of many cheese lovers. It is a soft, creamy cheese (50+ fat) with a very accessible and mild taste. This makes Passendale a beloved cheese that should not be missing on the breakfast table or in the lunch box. In addition, the cheese is slightly sweet and soft in texture, so it almost melts on the tongue.
In addition to the delicious taste, there is a special story associated with the origin of the cheese. Passendale was developed by a couple who had to flee to Normandy during the First World War. In France they learned the intricacies of cheese making from a family member. Once back in their familiar Passendale, they passionately started producing their own cheese on their newly built farm. The quality was so exceptional that the company quickly grew. Fortunately, this cheese also managed to reach the rest of Europe!
Freshly cut for an optimal taste experience
At GoudaCheeseShop.com we guarantee the highest quality. We do not work with pieces of cheese that have been pre-packaged for a long time. As soon as we receive your order, we cut the Passendale fresh for you. Because we immediately pack this cheese airtight and tightly vacuum, the superior taste is preserved. To optimally protect the mild, creamy texture during transport, we always add a cooling pack to your order. This guarantees you a fresh product that you can keep unopened in the refrigerator for weeks.
Frequently asked questions about Passendale Cheese
Does Passendale cheese really come from Belgium?
Yes, absolutely! Passendale is still made in Belgium. The name of the cheese refers to the village of Passendale, a municipality of Zonnebeke in West Flanders. This is the original place where the making of this cheese started right after the First World War.
How does Passendale taste compared to young Gouda cheese?
Both cheeses are mild, but Passendale has a noticeably softer and creamier structure that melts faster in the mouth. The taste is subtly sweet, not salty and very smooth, making it an excellent cheese for lovers of soft cheeses.
How long can the cheese be kept?
Thanks to our careful vacuum packaging, the cheese can safely be kept unopened in the refrigerator for 7 to 8 weeks. After opening, we advise wrapping the cheese in the supplied cheese paper, it will then stay fresh in the vegetable drawer for about 1 to 2 weeks.
Do you have more Belgian cheeses in your assortment?
Certainly! In addition to Passendale, we also sell other delicious cheeses from our southern neighbors. You can easily find them all in our Belgian cheese category.
