Van Schier Vrije Vogels Mild is a tribute to the vast nature and rich bird life of Schiermonnikoog. The cheese reflects the balance between agriculture and nature, where the farmers not only care for their cows, but also contribute to the conservation of meadow birds such as the black-tailed godwit, lapwing, oystercatcher and redshank.
By adjusting the mowing policy and maintaining herb-rich grasslands, an ideal habitat for birds and insects is created. This natural diet is also reflected in the cows' milk, which results in a rich, creamy cheese with a pure flavour.
The cheeses are brined with sea salt and matured in the salty sea air, which adds a subtle, natural flavour dimension. The result is an accessible, mildly matured cheese with a soft, creamy texture – perfect on bread, in a salad or with drinks.
In addition to an excellent flavour, Van Schier Vrije Vogels Mild contributes to a sustainable food chain. The dairy farmers on Schiermonnikoog have consciously reduced their livestock by 40% to reduce nitrogen emissions and strengthen biodiversity on the island. Thanks to the collaboration with the Dutch Bird Protection, the meadows are managed in an environmentally friendly way, which contributes to a healthy ecosystem in which birds and plants flourish.
Free from preservatives, colourings and artificial additives, this cheese offers an authentic taste experience with respect for nature and tradition.
