Long Description:
On Schiermonnikoog, the balance between farming and nature is carefully maintained. The island’s dairy farmers have chosen to reduce their livestock by over one-third, leading to a 21% reduction in nitrogen emissions while creating more space for biodiversity. This shift makes the island’s polder landscape even more attractive for meadow birds and native plant species.

To support this transition, the farmers produce their own cheese under the Van Schier label. By processing their own milk, they ensure economic sustainability while creating a premium product. The milk is pasteurized at 72°C, naturally lactose-free, and gluten-free. Because the rich Jersey milk is not skimmed, the cheese has a creamier texture than most supermarket cheeses.

In addition to reducing nitrogen, the farmers implement sustainable methods to support biodiversity. They preserve grasslands, encourage flowering fields, and limit chemical use. Their cows graze for three months a year in the Kwelder nature reserve, contributing to a healthier ecosystem.

In collaboration with the Dutch Bird Protection Society, wetland areas have been introduced to attract insects and birds like the black-tailed godwit, lapwing, and redshank. Special water pumps create shallow wetlands, enriching the soil and encouraging wildlife diversity.

Van Schier cheese is made as naturally as possible, without artificial colors, flavors, or E-numbers. The ingredients are simple: milk, cultures, rennet, and salt, with herbs added to flavored varieties. A conscious choice for those who value pure, artisanally made cheese.
